Deciduous shrub or small tree with purple leaves that emerge in spring and turn orange in fall. Fading pink-red flowers create purple puffs of "smoke". Grows with a rounded habit. Use as accent, hedge, firescaping, specimen, border, or for mass planting.
Plant with Tickseed or Black-Eyed Susan
Green Thumb Guide
Tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers well drained soils with medium moisture. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring if bloom is desired. If bloom not desired, cut back far to encourage growth of vigorous new shoots with larger leaves. Apply an all-purpose fertilizer in spring.
These characteristics apply to the greater Sacramento area and nearby regions.
