Other Timely Tasks For January

  • Brighten up those gray January days and add a cheerful splash of color in your yard with cool-season annuals: Pansy, Viola, Stock, Primrose, Cyclamen, Iceland Poppy, Alyssum, and Paludosum Daisy are all looking prime right now!
  • Sow seeds or plant seedlings for broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, and onions. Plant bareroot artichoke crowns in morning sun, afternoon shade.
  • Plant for pollinators by sowing early-blooming natives like California Poppies or Common Tidy Tips seeds now for spring nectar.
  • Clean, sharpen, and oil your pruners, loppers, and shears. Healthy cuts = healthy plants.
  • Boost humidity to keep houseplants happy. HVAC heat dries the air, inviting pests. Add a humidifier, set pots on a pebble tray, spritz or group plants together to keep moisture levels up.
