It's Time To Prune
January is the time to prune dormant trees (including fruit trees) and shrubs (except spring bloomers). Remove dead or crossing branches.

Refresh Mulch
Refresh mulch around perennials and shrubs to lock in moisture, protect roots, and stop weeds before they sprout.

Houseplant Care
Shorter days mean less sunlight, so move plants closer to bright windows or supplement with grow lights. Dust leaves with a damp cloth so they can soak up every bit of light.

For The Birds!
January 5th is National Bird Day! So let’s do our best for the birds. Feed the birds, supplement natural foraging with quality seeds, nuts, or suet, and always keep feeders and bird baths clean to prevent disease.

Other Timely Tasks For January

  • Add winter cheer with annual color like beautiful Pansies, Violas, Snapdragons, Primrose, and Ornamental Kale.
  • Plant onions outside, but start seeds inside for broccoli, kale, lettuce, spinach, cauliflower and Swiss chard.
  • Plant fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs including roses this month.
  • Keep frost cloth handy for surprise freezes.
  • Clean, sharpen, and oil your pruners, loppers, and shears. Healthy cuts = healthy plants.
