What's a Pre-emergent?

Pre-emergents are designed to prevent weeds from germinating. Once they start to grow, a pre-emergent will no longer work. At that point the only effective methods are pulling by hand or applying weed killers (post-emergents).

The most common weed we're asked about is crabgrass. Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures get up to around 57° F and higher. You may notice earlier germination near walkways where soil gets a little extra heat from the concrete, or later in shady areas.

We've taken some of the guess work out of knowing when to apply pre-emergents, based on the many weed varieties and seasons of germination. An application of pre-emergents to lawns and flower beds in February or early March, will keep the crabgrass at bay, along with many other summer varieties. But keep an eye on the weather; you might have to apply earlier or later depending on how early we shift to warmer temps.

Follow the recommended application dates above for a well-rounded attack on weeds before they get growing.

We offer a wide selection of pre- and post-emergents. Stop by and talk with our experts to guide you through your specific situation.
