Gardening Tips For September 2025

Average High is 94°. Average Low is 59°.

Let's keep the garden vibes strong as summer winds down and fall peeks in! Fall is the perfect time to put something new in the ground: cool-season veggies, cool-season annuals, and spring-blooming bulbs to name just a few. It's also time for some seasonal maintenance: give your lawn some extra care, adjust your irrigation system for the cooler temps, and give all your plantings—old and new—a healthy dose of compost to feed and protect.

Keep Those Veggies Growing

  • Keep harvesting those last summer veggies while they last. As beds open up, roll out the welcome mat with compost for your winter veggie garden.

  • Turn your home into a happy jungle! Celebrate National Indoor Plant Week, September 15-21.

  • Cooler weather means cool crops. Time to start planting your fall veggies—lettuce, beets, kale, peas, spinach, turnips, and more.

Keep Those Blooms Coming

  • Next years' blooms begin in September. Choose from winter- and spring-flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips, crocus, and more.

  • Cool-season annuals are starting to arrive in the nursery. Pansies, snapdragons, and calendula will brighten your garden all winter long.

  • It's time to pamper your lawn after a long, hot summer: dethatch, reseed, and watch it thrive!

Keep Your Plants Happy

  • Feed your future harvest by applying fertilizer to your fruit trees now. Don’t forget to add a cozy mulch blanket of compost. You’ll be rewarded with bigger and juicier yields next year.

  • Start planting ahead for tasty harvests. Garlic planting time starts in September.

  • As daylight fades, your plants thirst does as well. Cut back your irrigation times as needed.
